ããGood afternoon ï¼ladies and gentlemen!Iâm very honored to stand here and give you a short speech! my topic is Opportunities and Challenges.First, I would like to know, what does your destiny offer you? Happiness, wisdom, a strong body or something else. If I had asked this question to president Nixon, he would probably had said,âOur destiny offers not the cup of despair, but the chalice of opportunity.âNeedless to say, one of the biggest opportunities given to China is the 2008 Olympic Games. Till now, we have used two sevenths of the preparation time. How much changes have you seen? New roads, new subway lines, public-exercising equipments with beautiful colors, large blocks of grass fields, and also lots of modern gyms which are under construction.Other than those, there are even more good effects brought to us by the Olympic Games that cannot be seen directly. For example, more and more people will get to know China. Iâm sure the mysterious Chinese culture will attract them strongly. And the games will also do good to the economy and environment, for it is gaining the attention of foreign investors and the awareness of environmental protection is being strengthened. What is more, Olympic Games give a unique opportunity to inspire and educate a new generation of Chinese youth with the Olympic values and the Olympic spirit. Now that we have seen so many advances, could you even imagine us losing the holding rights?Iâve already said a lot about the Olympics and China. But I think everyone should use some time to think of this question, âDoes the Olympic Games have any special meaning to you?âFor us, I mean the Chinese youth, 2008 Olympic Games is a tremendous gift. ããWe've all been taught that we should help people. It is the right thing to do and will make us popular with others. It may even win us favors in return. However, we must be realistic. We can't say yes to every request. If we did, we would fail or go crazy for sure. Sometimes we simply don't have the time to help. In this case, we must know how to say no politely.When we need to say no, here is one method we can try. First, we should tell the truth. If we really can't do something, we should just say so. Second, we should remember to refuse requests politely. We must communicate clearly, but must also be sincere and sympathetic. A true friend will understand. Finally, we must not feel guilty about saying no. Sometimes refusing others is the right thing to do. It can save ourselves, and them, a lot of trouble. In short, we cannot please everyone all the time. Refusing favors is a part of life.

Are you still believe in the traditional sports concept that "winner-takes-all" or "victory only belongs to the winners"? When Sunyang didnât won the champion of 1500-meter freestyle swimming match, but stick to the last minutes enduring the pain of physical sickness, are you still accusing him of not winning honor for our country? Of course, no!

ããBecause of the nationwide sports system in our country, we always attach great importance to the glory of the most high-necked award platform, requiring athletes to win the game. ããBidding for the Olympic Games is, in a way, an image-creating undertaking. The first and foremost thing is to let people fall in love with the city at first sight, attracting them by its unique image. What image does Beijing intend to create for itself once it has the opportunity to host the 2008 Olympics? Itâs known to all that the Beijing Municipal Government has already set the theme for the future games: New Beijing, Great Olympics. For me, the 2008 Olympics will be a great green Olympics illuminated with two more special colors, yellow and red.

ããFirst, yellow is a meaningful color. The Yellow River is Chinaâs mother river and the cradle of Chinese civilization. We are of the yellow race and descendants of the Yellow Emperor. This color has a special origin and great significance for the Chinese people. Beijing is the capital of New China and previously the capital for nine dynasties in Chinese history. So, yellow will naturally add splendor to the 2008 Games.

ããSecondly, the 2008 Olympics will be a red pageant.

ããAbove all, the 2008 Olympics will be a green Olympics.

ããCertainly, all of this is no easy task. But I am sure that all of us have confidence that we will realize these âgreenâ goals, for now we have the full support and participation of the environmentally conscious citizens. Each citizen is showing great concern for every one of the steps the city government takes. As the saying goes, âUnited, we standâï¼ and a green Beijing will be achieved.

ããWhen our aspiration becomes a reality, it will be a unique Olympics. âNew Beijing, Great Olympicsâ will be weaved of these three superb colors: yellow, red and green.

ããI am very happy to participate in this English Summer Program because it helps me to improve my oral English.

ããEach day I arrive early for class; and sit in the first row which is nearest to the teacher so that I can hear the teacher clearly.

ããI have attended every class, not missed a single one, only because I cherish this opportunity to learn to speak English well.

ããOur teacher is a wonderful teacher. She speaks English slowly and clearly so that we can easily understand her. She tries hard to help us with pronunciation, intonation and rhythm and teaches us to speak English smoothly. She helps everyone with every difficult sound. She tells us stories and teaches us life skills, which will be useful to us in the future. She is very kind to us and we all love her.

ããIn the beginning, many of our students were shy about standing up in front of the class to speak English, but with the help of our teacher; and with the encouragement of our teacher every one of our class can now stands up and speak English loudly.

ããOur teacher seems not to be an expert on languages. She does not tell us that the word âgoodbyeâ originally means: âgod be with youâ or âgod bless youâ when we are talking about the basic expressions of saying goodbye. She does not tell us such things. She only teaches us every day English to help us to communicate with others. And that is just what I needed. So, this program has been very helpful to me. I hope there will be more such programs in the future so that many more people can benefit from it.

ããMy dream is that one day I can go to America for a Chinese Summer program to teach Americans to speak Chinese and tell them about China.
